2060 N. Humboldt Ave.

Bayou provides a modern approach to all things Cajun. The dining room and deck, overlooking the wooded Milwaukee River valley, is striking and contemporary. Anything can happen in this menu: Portabella tempura has kernels of sweet corn in the breading, while the duck spring roll has meat smoked Southern style. Jambalaya is a deconstructed version with five meats separated over a bed of rice. The andouille and smoked duck shine. The kitchen sees to all of the details, including making their own hot sauces. Crabby’s Bar and Grill

2113 E. Oklahoma Ave.

This South Side seafood haunt is a relic of decades gone-by. The building’s windowless exterior gives way muted lighting, a large bar and unique menu of pastas, Cajun dishes and steaks cut to order. Crabby’s famed seafood menu steams up king crab, conch and lobster, to name a few. Drop in on a dinner-only basis; the doors are closed on lunch hour. (J.D.) $$-$$$. CC: VS, MC. FF, FB. 6414 W. Greenfield Ave.

The theme is Cajun, but the biggest draw is the multitude of seafood specials listed on the dinner menu. Start with crawfish etouffee or Jonah crab claws, then choose from frog’s legs, red snapper, king crab, prawns or a bouillabaisse loaded with assorted seafood. Creole-rubbed ribeye will appeal to carnivores. Portions are large and prices are modest, so be prepared to wait for a table. (J.B.) $$-$$$. CC: All major. RS. Handicap access. 778-2228

Maxie’s Southern Comfort

6732 W. Fairview Ave.

Maxie’s offers Southern food and hospitality. While much is Louisiana in inspiration starting with gumbo, jambalaya and po’ boy sandwiches, there is Carolina pulled pork and shrimp with grits. Seafood is flown in several times a week and includes fresh grouper and oysters on the half shell. The peach pie is a must for every Southern-style meal here. (J.B.) $$-$$$. CC: All major. FB.
