Vintage red-and-white checkered tablecloths remind customers of Italian restaurants from days past. Maria’s Pizzeria

Loyal customers say Maria’s serves up Milwaukee’s best pizza. Those still less conservative in their praise call it the best pizza ever. One thing’s for sure; the dining experience doesn’t get much homier than at this family-run restaurant. Original founder and namesake, Maria Traxel, has passed away but she’s certainly left her imprint on the place, from the oblong pizzas to the dated décor and the strict no booze and cash only policy. Plastic forks and knives won’t suffice for this pizza. They’ll snap and splinter on contact with the hearty crust, oozing cheese and generously layered toppings. Pizzeria Piccola

Pizzeria Piccola is casual; order at the counter and find an upstairs table. The menu centers on Neapolitan pizzas. These are single-sized with a thin center crust and doughy edges. All toppings are traditional Italian, combinations you cannot go wrong with. The menu does offer more. There is sauteed mozzarella as a starter, a salad of arugula, pastas, and some decent paninis. Riverfront Pizzeria

As the name suggest the Riverfront has abundant Milwaukee River views and plenty of outdoor tables along the RiverWalk. The specialty is thin-crust pizzas, some of the better ones found in this area. Design your own using over 25 toppings or try one of their classics like a pizza bianco. Or opt for a novelty item like the cheeseburger pizza. The menu also has salads and sandwiches for a lighter side. The entrees are mainly pastas. The interior is casual with a friendly bar. Zaffiro’s Pizza

The setting is definitely tavern, but they serve the best traditional thin-crust pizza in town. No such toppings as duck sausage here; just one cheese is used and nothing is wood-fired.
