Milwaukee County's Neediest Animals May Just Find Homes

Breed specific laws, in conjunction with incidents of violence highlighted in the media, make it hard for individuals to welcome a pit bull or pit bull mix into their home. With all the myths surrounding this over-bred, mistreated breed, Milwaukee can't help but teeter on the edge of an epidemic of unwanted pit bulls. It's no wonder that control facilities struggle with dog placement.

Luckily, that hasn't stopped local animal welfare organizations from trying.

Central Bark in Menomonee Valley and the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission (MADACC) are teaming up to host MADACC's first off-site adoption event for their long-term animals. Approximately, 10 dogs will be happily awaiting future owners from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 31.

Melanie Sobel, executive director of MADACC, is ecstatic to get the ball rolling. "If people want to help Milwaukee County's neediest animals, this is the event to go to adopt a dog!" she says. "MADACC's goal is to provide an outlet for the wonderful adoptable animals at MADACC that are not selected by other animal welfare agency adoption programs but still deserve a second chance at life."

Jessica McCann, owner of Central Bark and huge supporter of MADACC, has graciously offered her facility as a venue to showcase these animals on a regular basis (including cats), according to Sobel.

So individuals are encouraged to come and mingle with dogs that are spayed/neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, heartworm tested and flea/worm treated prior to adoption. A $100 adoption fee will be required along with a $12 licensing fee for Milwaukee County residents.

Central Bark is located at 333 N. 25th St.
