was Mozart's first truly great opera, its orchestration being one of its glories. The composer's frequent use of the chorus and extensive ballet displays a French style and, dramatically, it's head and shoulders above Mozart's previous efforts. Set on the island of Crete, the opera recounts the legend of Idomeneo, the Cretan king, and his fateful voyage home after the Trojan War. His conflict with the sea god Neptune sets up the drama's central conflict.
