One of the slyest pop groups heard on AM radio in the 1960s, The Turtles slipped the cheeky line “How is the weather?” into their unabashed declaration of love, “Happy Together,” and set the optimistic lyric to an emotionally shifting melody that whispered of storm clouds in the forecast. The Turtles’ gushing offer of romance, “Elenore,” was penned to suggest an interoffice memo being dictated to a secretary.

Little wonder that the creative minds behind The Turtles, the duo of Flo and Eddie, spent some time in Frank Zappa’s band. Nowadays they are drawing dividends from the capital of their string of golden hits with The Turtles by heading the “Happy Together Tour 2013,” a reunion for AM radio pop stars of the late ’60s and early ’70s.

The annual journey to the past, now in its fourth summer, features The Turtles plus Chuck Negron (of Three Dog Night), Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, Mark Lindsay (of Paul Revere & the Raiders) and Gary Lewis & the Playboys. They were a divergent lot in their day, sartorially—the Raiders sported Tea Party garb while the Union Gap preferred the somber blue of the Civil War—as well as musically. The Raiders were a snarling garage band and the Union Gap sang soap opera scenarios to bellowing orchestral arrangements while the Playboys proffered cheery tunes. And then there were The Turtles, finding irony in the formula of pop music.
