Now 19 and tweeting shirtless pics of himself and recording increasingly adult-minded music, Justin Bieber has outgrown his original niche as a kid pop star. Enter 17-year-old Austin Mahone, a dreamy-eyed, silky-haired pop singer who has been described as “the second coming of Justin Bieber.” Like Bieber, he was discovered by posting videos of himself on YouTube, and he has even covered Bieber’s song “Mistletoe.” Mahone’s not trying to reinvent the wheel, then, but simply trying to keep it spinning, and so far it seems like tweens are responding. Though he hasn’t released an album yet—his debut, Junior Year, is tentatively titled for a fall release—he’s built a following of fawning fans through G-rated singles like “Say You’re Just a Friend,” an update of the old Biz Markie song “Just a Friend” in the spirit of Mario’s similarly kid-friendly “Just a Friend 2002.” Since Mahone’s song was recorded in 2012, not 2002, though, it features Flo Rida.

Would white supremacists, neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan pose the same threat they do now if a mainstream Republican were president instead of Donald Trump?
