If Fall Out Boy could have predicted the response they received from their 2013 comeback, perhaps they would have reunited earlier. After retiring the group at the end of the ’00s to pursue solo projects that garnered mostly cold reactions from even their biggest fans, Fall Out Boy returned last year with a ballsy album titled Save Rock and Roll and a beefy arena-rock single, “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up),” which improbably became one of the biggest hits of their career, introducing them to a new Top 40 audience and leading to some of the largest shows they’ve ever played. Not bad for a band the music industry had left for dead just a few years prior.

Fall Out Boy shares this show with a similarly resilient co-headliner: their onetime labelmates and brothers and sisters in emo Paramore, who also cracked Top 40 stations last year with a comeback album. Their first record since founding members Josh and Zac Farro left the group on very ugly terms, Paramore’s self-titled 2013 album is a remarkable expansion of the band’s sound, with dalliances in post-punk, soul and country, styles that singer Hayley Williams adapts to with conviction and infectious vigor. It was the most purely enjoyable modern rock album of 2013, precisely because it so gleefully pushed the boundaries of what a modern rock album could sound like.
