Like everywhere in America, Milwaukee has its share of more or less identical multiplexes. Marcus North Shore occasionally shows art-house films and hosts the Milwaukee Jewish Film Festival, and AMC Mayfair gives screen space to Bollywood movies. Otherwise, most are devoted to the latest offerings from Hollywood.
Fortunately, there are alternatives. The UW-Milwaukee Union Theatre maintains an ambitious program of recent and older feature films and documentaries in fall and spring, and hosts such events as the Festival of Films in French, the Latin-American Film Series, the LGBT Film/Video Festival and the Milwaukee Italian Film Festival. Although the Landmark Oriental and Downer cinemas have devoted increasing blocks of time to blockbusters, they can still be counted on for presenting major independent and foreign films.
The Times and Rosebud are a pair of old neighborhood houses running an eclectic mix of Hollywood hits and lesser-known recent films. Like the Rosebud, the Fox Bay Cinema Grill serves pizza, sandwiches, beer and wine along with movies. It sure beats the stale, overpriced popcorn sold at some concession stands.
