As summer approaches, what better way to get in shape than by hitting one of Milwaukee's pristine bike trails? Whether on bike, foot, skates or skateboard, Milwaukee gives you more than 100 miles of paved, scenic trails to choose from.
You can start off your exercise routine on the East Side, where the Oak Leaf Trail will take you along Lake Michigan by the Milwaukee Art Museum and Alterra. Make sure to take a gander at Milwaukee's serene skyline while you're there. The Oak Leaf Trail winds through many other parts of the city as well. If you're feeling adventurous, whip out your mountain bike and head to the river trails in Whitnall Park in Hales Corners. For maps of Milwaukee's bike trails, go to www.city.milwaukee.gov/maps4460.htm.
The city isn't the only place for bike trails. Check out the Lake Country Recreational Trail from Waukesha to Delafield, the Bugline Trail from Menomonee Falls to Merton, the Wild Goose State Park Trail from Clyman Junction to Fond du Lac, the Hank Aaron State Trail from Milwaukee to Wauwatosa, and the Ozaukee County Interurban Trail from Mequon to Belgium.
In May, the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin(www.bfw.org)  will host its annual Bike to Work Week, which features daily events such as biking with the mayor and a bike-in movie. If you need to repair your bike before the festivities, the friendly people at Ben's Cycle, among other bike shops, will be sure to assist you.
And, lastly, make sure to wear a helmet (and possibly some elbow pads). Happy trails.
