In its most ideal form, a record label is more than a company that releases, distributes and promotes albums. A label can also be a seal of quality, a signal to listeners that, if they like the label's other releases, there's a good chance they'll like the one they're holding in their hand, too. That's why even in 2015, at a time when it's never been easier for artists to self-release their own music, labels remain the most effective music recommendation system there is.
Milwaukee's Latest Flame Records always understood this. From the beginning in the early '00s the label staked its niche, releasing noise-rock records that were usually too heavy for indie tastes but too quirky for punk and hardcore purists, though it also released its share of fairly straightforward pop-punk, emo and indie-rock records, too. Its tastes weren't for everyone, but listeners who shared them were always extremely well served.
Last week label head Dan Hanke announced that after 12 years, the label will cease releasing physical media. To mark the end of that run, he's organized a two-night farewell show for the label in October at Club Garibaldi featuring 15 acts with ties to the label, including three bands reuniting for the event: The Response, Troubled Hubble and Police Teeth. "When we first broached the idea of having a farewell show, we were inundated with responses from bands, past and present," Hanke wrote. "We were quite honestly overwhelmed by the love which reminded us once again why we started the label in the first place."
The lineup for the Latest Flame farewell shows, which will also feature a big sale on label LPs, CDs and shirts, is below.
