11th Nihon Quilt Show
WMQFA to host 11th Nihon Quilt Show Exhibit Featuring 33 stunning quilts from Japan and around the world October 23, 2013 â€“ January 5, 2014
The Wisconsin Museum of Quilts & Fiber Arts is one of only three museums in the U.S. chosen as a venue for a traveling exhibit of 33 quilts from around the world. The quilts were gathered by Japanâ€™s largest quilt guild, in a juried show in 2011. These quilts feature amazing design and craftsmanship!

October 26 â€“ Sashiko Workshop, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with Akemi Nakano Cohn. Sashiko is a traditional Japanese embroidery craft that typically involves stitching with white silk thread on indigo fabric.
November 9 â€“ Lecture â€śWeaving, Dyeing, Printing: Textiles & Clothing in Japanese Woodblock Printsâ€ť with Dr. Hilary K. Snow, 9:30 a.m.
During the 18th and 19th centuries in Japan, woodblock prints (ukiyo-e) became a popular medium for depicting daily life and interests of the newly prosperous merchant class. From the luxurious kimonos worn by Kabuki actors and courtesans to more humble workersâ€™ clothes, woodblock prints displayed the wide range of textiles produced in early modern Japan. This talk will highlight examples of textile and textile production as shown in prints and explore how prints helped to disseminate textile patterns and influenced consumer fashion. Textile styles developed and perfected during this period form the basis of many modern textile styles in Japan.
November 9 â€“ Temari Ball Class, noon to 4 p.m. with Terri Sankovitz. Temari Balls are Japanese handicrafts made by wrapping silk thread around ball forms in decorative patterns.
Family Fun Days, with Japanese crafts for all ages, will be held Nov. 3, 12:30 â€“ 3:30 p.m. and again Nov. 16, 10:30 a.m. â€“ 1:30 p.m. These are drop in events, with no registration required. However, youth groups and people bringing 6 or more children should register in advance.
