Racine Theatre Guild Auditions for 37 Postcards

2519 Northwestern Ave., Racine, WI, 53404

Auditions are being held on January 13 and 14 at the Racine Theatre Guild for “The Miracle Worker,” a drama by William Gibson, based on Helen Keller’s early life. The play has performances on two weekends and four weekdays, April 4-15. The Racine Theatre Guild is a nonprofit community theatre located at 2519 Northwestern Avenue (Highway 38) in Racine.

Central to this true and inspirational story is the volatile relationship between lonely teacher Annie Sullivan and her blind, deaf and mute student, Helen Keller. Doomed to a world of silence and isolated by her inability to communicate, young Helen is wild, destructive, and spoiled by her family. Only Annie sees her potential and is determined to reach her, no matter what.

“The Miracle Worker” began on TV as a 1957 “Playhouse 90” and was adapted by William Gibson for a Broadway production in 1959, featuring Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke. That production won four Tony Awards, including Best Play. The two stars reprised their roles for the 1962 feature film. In 1979, it was remade for television, with Patty Duke switching from the role of Keller to that of Sullivan. The play was revived on Broadway as recently as 2010.

“The Miracle Worker” has a large cast, with roles for males and females of various ages, 10 and older. Three of the roles require African-American actors: a woman (early 20s to mid-40s), a boy and a girl, both 10-14. All roles are open. Shawn Britten is the director.

Anyone interested in auditioning should come to the lobby of the Racine Theatre Guild at 7 p.m. on either Monday, January 13, or Tuesday, January 14. Appointments are not being taken. Auditions consist of cold readings from the script. Scripts are available in advance and may be checked out of the box office with payment of a refundable deposit. In addition to actors, production crew volunteers are needed.

For further information, call the box office at 262-633-4218, go to the website (www.racinetheatre.org), or visit the RTG any weekday between noon and 6 p.m.
