Martin Johnson Heade was one of the most varied and inventive painters of the nineteenth century and is now recognized as one of the most important American artists of his generation. Heade devoted equal time to a great many subjects, from powerful canvases of thunderstorms at sea to exquisite small studies of South American hummingbirds, portraits to still lifes. Presenting works drawn exclusively from the celebrated Heade collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the exhibition offers a retrospective overview of this important American artist’s career.
