Liverpool is the city that flashes to mind for many people when ‘60s British rock is mentioned. And not without reason, given The Beatles and lesser Merseybeat bands. However, as Stephen Tow successfully argues in London Reign Over Me, Britain’s capital and largest city was the true center of attention. London reared its share of hometown talent—The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks—and was the magnet for bands from across the UK. Despite some redundancies writing, Tow brings the era and the place to life with many recollections by the musicians of the clubs, the milieu and the attitude that transformed American musical influences into something distinctly British.
