Oni Dance Presents ‘Palimpsest’
UW-Milwaukee’s Kenilworth Studio 620
1925 E. Kenilworth Place
April 10-11
Maria Gillespie, UW-Milwaukee dance department assistant professor and a key figure in the exciting new Milwaukee dance-music improvisation collaboration Hyperlocal, is also artistic director of Oni Dance, which she founded in Los Angeles in 2005 and brought to Milwaukee. These forces will join in Palimpsest, a program of new and restaged works by Gillespie with Hyperlocal dancer/choreographers from Wild Space Dance Company, Danceworks Performance Company, Milwaukee Ballet II and UWM and with Milwaukee composer/musician Tim Russell.
The concert features “Bloom Inscribed,” the latest development in a “transdisciplinary” work-in-progress first created for the 2014 Beijing International Dance Festival by Gillespie and Oni Dance collaborators Nguyen Nguyen (dancer, choreographer and faculty member at Renaissance Arts Academy in Los Angeles) and Fabio Altenbach (astrophysicist, computer engineer and Renaissance Arts Academy faculty member). Their web-based rehearsal process using Skype and Google hangouts influenced the form and content of this live/virtual meditation on “home” intersecting film, live camera, projections, music and dance theater. Admission is $20, $15 for students with a current ID. Call 414-259-5162 or visit brownpapertickets.com.
