The Wisconsin Department of Health Services today reports 207 newly confirmed cases statewide bringing the total to 5,052 cases. There were 11 additional deaths reported for a total of 257.
In a press briefing on Thursday afternoon, DHS Secretary-designee Andrea Palm said that the uptick in cases is expected because of an increase in total tests administered. The state has relaxed the guidelines health care providers should be using when determining whether a test can be given to a particular patient. The current daily testing capacity of the state is 7,837 and 2,161 tests were preformed in the last 24 hours.
A total of 56,508 tests have been performed so far, which means about 8.9 percent of tests have come back positive. Part of the state's Badger Bounce Back plan that is a guide to reopening the economy includes bringing the positive test rate down.
Gov. Tony Evers said in the press briefing that he is hopeful the state will be in a position to allow in-person classes across public schools in the fall, but also said the risks may be too high to allow it.
The data shows a 4.3 percent increase in confirmed cases in the state since yesterday.

DHS reports the loss of 11 additional lives in the last 24 hours for a total of 257 deaths in the state.
There have been a total of 1,318 hospitalizations related to COVID-19 in the state since tracking began. There are 349 patients that are currently hospitalized and 201 of those individuals are awaiting test results. 342 of the 1,318 hospitalized patients have received intensive care. There are 146 COVID-19 cases currently in intensive care.
Milwaukee County had 78 new confirmed cases in today's report, up to 2,382 total cases.
