Milwaukee's drastic seasonal changes are both a blessing and a curse when it comes to keeping kids entertained. Summer and fall are idyllic, with inviting parks and pools spread across the city and hiking trails along the area's rivers. And although the long winter months can drive many of us indoors, they also offer great opportunities for sledding, snowshoeing and ice skating. The gentle slopes of Bay View's Humboldt Park provide perfect spots for young sledders, and Red Arrow Park's outdoor ice rink is an inexpensive, lively skating venue.
For those who prefer to stay warm and dry, there's the newly spruced up Mitchell Park Domes, where visitors can bask in the toasty tropics or arid desert. And then there are always the tried and trusted museums, which include the informative Milwaukee Public Museum, the interactive displays of Discovery World or opportunities for imaginative play at Betty Brinn. A number of local organizations also offer classes for those with an artistic bent, many of which are free of charge like the Walker's Point Center for the Arts' After-School Drop-In or Afternoons With Art programs.
When it comes to clothing the apples of our discerning eyes, Milwaukee offers a growing range of mall alternatives. The Third Ward features Sprout and Freckle Face, both of which sell an appealing range of clothes, shoes and toys. Meanwhile in Mequon, P Sue'soffers fashionable clothing and footwear for both children and expectant mothers, while Olive offers organic clothing for children aged 18 months to 8 years by Seattle designer Kate Quinn. Bay View also offers some alluring green-friendly options, including Future Green and the newer Chartreuse.
