The Wisconsin Department of Health Services today reported the biggest single day increase in cases with 224 newly confirmed cases statewide up to a total of 4,845. There were 4 additional deaths reported for a total of 246.
DHS Deputy Secretary Julie Willems Van Dijk shared in a press briefing on Wednesday that contact tracing has revealed at least 19 people who either voted or were poll workers have now tested positive for COVID-19. Deputy Secretary Willems Van Dijk explained that we'd expect anyone who was exposed and infected during the April 7 election to exhibit symptoms by yesterday (April 21), but there can be several days of delay for getting a test, getting results, etc.
New cases in Brown County continue to grow. The county saw the biggest single day increase in cases since testing began with 88 new confirmed cases to a total of 402 cases. The Centers for Disease Control is in Green Bay to assist with testing and contact tracing related to a cluster of cases connected to the JBS meatpacking plant.
The state continues to report testing levels significantly below their daily capacity. There were 1,885 new tests while the state says there are 48 total labs that can perform a total of 7,898 tests. Deputy Secretary Willems Van Dijk said the state is continuing to get the message out to primary care physicians and others in the health care system that anyone exhibiting symptoms should now be able to get a test.

The data shows a 4.9 percent increase in confirmed cases in the state since yesterday. This is the biggest single day increase in new cases since reporting began.
A total of 54,346 tests have been performed so far, which means about 8.9 percent of tests have come back positive. Part of the state's Badger Bounce Back plan that is a guide to reopening the economy includes bringing the positive test rate down.
DHS reports the loss of 4 additional lives in the last 24 hours for a total of 246 deaths in the state.
The number of hospitalizations related to COVID-19 has risen by 50 cases since yesterday to a total of 1,302. That means about 26.9 percent of confirmed cases result in a hospitalization. The state also reported that 339 hospitalized patients received intensive care, or about 7 percent. There were 15 new cases brought to the ICU in the last 24 hours.
Milwaukee County had 70 new confirmed cases in today's report, up to 2,304 total cases.
