This massive trade show bills itself as the largest mineral and gem show in the Midwest, and features aisle after aisle of fossils, gems, and stones priced anywhere from “$1 to $100,000.” The event page says you can find everything “from museum-quality dinosaur bones and investment-grade minerals to designer jewelry and metaphysical crystals” at the five-day-long event.

Cream City Clash IV

The Milwaukee Iron Stags are our hometown team of combatants for the sport of buhurt or armored combat. Unlike live action roleplaying where foam weapons are used, these martial artists wear and wield real metal armor and weapons. Expect to see exciting one-on-one and multi-fighter “melees” with swinging swords, axes, and shields in this tournament. To add to the medieval vibes, there’s a “folk fair” of local artisans selling their wares and food and drink available.

Meg Jones Fest

This annual book fair returns with 20 local authors tabling with their work in Oak Creek Library’s multi-purpose room. A variety of genres will be featured that “suit all age levels and a variety of interests.” The event is dedicated to the memory of author, library advocate, and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Meg Jones.

Milwaukee History Club Social and Tour: 4th Base and Old Soldiers Home

The Milwaukee History Club was formed late last year to host monthly presentations, tours, and other events. Their meeting this month starts at 4th Base Restaurant, where people have the option to buy food and drink and hear about the building’s history. That’s followed by a stroll across the street for a walking tour of Old Soldiers Home, which opened in 1867 to care for Civil War veterans, one of 43 National Historic Landmarks in Wisconsin.

QWERTY Quarterly #13 Release Party

QWERTYFEST MKE announced that the festival will not take place this year (disclosure—your Madcap Milwaukee columnist is one of the organizers, along with OnMilwaukee’s Molly Snyder) but the event’s publication, a zine titled QWERTY Quarterly carries on, along with small scale release parties.
The zine features fiction, poetry, art, columns and short articles, most from local writers. This issue’s theme: “FU AI,” featuring some strongly worded condemnations on the pervasiveness of artificial intelligence and takes place at Lion’s Tooth bookstore in Bay View.
Copies of the zine are $5, the event is free to attend.
