Nathan Danzer as the boxer Kilroy.
Tennessee Williams’ Camino Real feels very much like a fantastic accident. It feels like what happens when a genius accidentally stumbles onto something extremely clever and then runs with it. It’s the type of script that might be maddeningly difficult to do justice to, but that’s no reason not to stage it. Thankfully, next month Off the Wall Theatre offers an intimate brush with extreme cleverness as it presents Williams’ classic.
Charismatic Nathan Danzer plays a young, American boxer named Kilroy who finds himself in an existential dead-end where strange and brutal things happen. The play takes place in the main plaza of the fiction hotel Siete Mares. With Off the Wall, that plaza will be a snug and cozy place which will doubtlessly bring the disturbing nature of the story into remarkably sharp focus. The cast includes many Off the Wall regulars including Marilyn White, Jeremy Welter and director Dale Gutzman as, “The Poet.”
Off the Wall’s production of Camino Real runs June 3-14 at Off the Wall’s space on 127 E. Wells St. For more information, visit offthewalltheatre.com.
