It’s not just beating a dead horse at this stage. Parodies of the hardboiled detective genre has been beaten to a bloody pulp over decades of spoofery. (One of my favorites was the movie Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. There was also a very clever bit I seem to remember, a brief and obscure little comic book piece Ivan Brunetti did for Biff Bang Pow back in 1991 called The Post-Modernist Always Rings Twice.) Next month, playwright Matthew Konkel drags the genre into a hopefully classy comedy with Jake Revolver: Freelance Secret Agent.
Staged in the Brumder Mansion, Milwaukee Entertainment Group presents a spoof of a live radio broadcast. Tom Marks directs the story of a man on the trail of the one who murdered his narrator. Kind of a clever postmodernist comedy twist that should be a fun evening in a very appropriate environment.
Milwaukee Entertainment Group’s Jake Revolver runs June 12-27 at the Brumder Mansion on 3046 W. Wisconsin Ave. For more information, visit milwaukeeentertainmentgroup.com.
