My understanding is that Chupa Chups lollipops have not changed their logo in over 40 years. Though it’s not alone, one doesn’t normally find that kind of longevity in a piece of commercial art. Of course, if Salvador Dali designs your logo, you may as well keep it forever.
Dali was one of the real geniuses of the 20th century. Next month, The Quasimondo Milwaukee Physical Theatre pays tribute to Dali with Giraffe on Fire. 7 composers and 7 choreographers and 7 visual artists collaborate on a surrealist theatre program that mixes “dance, music, puppetry, circus, poetry, visual art, and more.” Not quite theatre. Not quite dance. Not quite a concert. Not quite a gallery night. It’s something else that might also be all of those. They’re referring to it as an, “inter-arts safari.” This in a town that is also home to “The MillerCoors Giraffe Experience,” which sounds a lot more surreal than it actually is. The Milwaukee County Zoo’s giraffes are truly magnificent, but if you like your giraffes substantially more surreal, you’re perhaps better off with the Quasimondo next month. Brian Rott and Jenni Reinke direct.
Giraffe on Fire: A dance rhapsody in the key of Dalí runs May 21-31 at Studio G in the Grand Avenue Mall. For further information, visit thequasimondo.com.
