At first glance, Sondheim on Sondheim sounds like little more than another Stephen Sondheim musical revue. A dozen of his songs get pasted together into a program free enough to serve as a home for all of them. What Sondheim on Sondheim does that’s original is allow the composer himself to speak a few things about his craft between musical numbers. There are pre-recorded bits of interview footage with the legendary musical theatre figure.
This June, Broccoli Theatricals presents a production of the revue on the intimate stage of Theatre Unchained. The show features Grace McDonell, Allison Chicorel, Timothy J Barnes, Parker Cristan, Liz Norton, Jacob Sudbrink, Carrie Gray and Adam Qutaishat.
