Terrence James Coffman’s star is on the rise. The erstwhile president of the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and longtime Wisconsin resident was awarded the prestigious grand prize at the Charles Allis Art Museum’s 2014 “Forward: A Survey of Wisconsin Art Now” with a painting entitled Angel 1. Although his winning submission has all the hallmarks of an abstract work, Coffman rejects the characterization. He prefers to think of his art as “non-objective landscapes of my inner being, my attempt to move into a greater reality.”
A collection of Coffman’s recent renderings of his inner being—including Angel 1, which will be flanked by two additional canvasses to create a triptych—will go on display at the Charles Allis on July 31. Many of the works in “Recent Works By Terrence Coffman” were inspired by Coffman’s time among the landscapes of Ireland’s County Clare, where he stayed for a 2011 residency at the Burren College of Art. On Saturday, Aug. 15, Coffman will be teaching a one-day workshop on landscape abstraction. Register by Aug. 5 for the unique opportunity to work with a tour guide to explore the non-objective landscapes of your own inner being.
Architectural Treasures Tour
Cedarburg Cultural Center
W62 N546 Washington Ave., Cedarburg
Perhaps because we think of art as something to live with instead of something to live in, architecture is often given short shrift in discussions of visual art. The Cedarburg Cultural Center is not so narrow-minded. The CCC’s 2015 Architectural Treasures Tour leads attendees to five residences that straddle the categories household and artwork. The properties include historic homes that date back as far as 1848 and serve as time machines to transport you back to the mid-19th century. Tours are offered for $13 in advance (or $15 day of) on Saturday, Aug. 1, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 2, noon-4 p.m.
