The armistice on the Western Front of France in 1918 cleared a path for negotiations that led to the signing of the Treaty of Versailles while conflict continued in various forms in Europe through 1922. Both the armistice and the treaty contained elements that led to the rise of fascism, the outbreak of World War II, and problems that continue to shake the world order to the present day.
On the other hand, the armistice in Korea helps keep peace and, despite daunting geopolitical pressures, gives hope for a permanent treaty on the Korean Peninsula. Dr. Shellman will speak on the lessons learned from these two cease-fires in calling for a world-wide armistice to end war and human conflict in our contemporary world.
Historian, journalist, and former Deputy Director of the UW-Milwaukee Institute of World Affairs, Gary Shellman, PhD, is Past President of the United Nations Association of Greater Milwaukee and served on the Wisconsin Governor’s Commission on the United Nations.
