PLAYWRIGHT MARIE KOHLER REWRITES PLAY WITH PARKSIDE THEATRE STUDENTS
The UW–Parkside Theatre Arts Department presents the play “Midnight and Moll Flanders” from Friday, Nov. 30, through Sunday, Dec. 9. The play will be performed in the Black Box Theater in the Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for Arts and Humanities. The play is directed by UW-Parkside theatre arts professor Brian Gill and was written by Wisconsin’s own Marie Kohler. Tickets are $18 general admission, $14 seniors/faculty & staff, and $10 students.
This production gives Parkside Theatre Arts students the opportunity to work directly with Kohler, a Milwaukee-based playwright, and will be performing the latest draft of the play that Kohler is updating during – and based on – rehearsals. “Moll Flanders” is a larger-than-life character whose drive for love and survival leads to sexual adventures, multiple marriages and a career as an infamous thief. The show explores the influence of gender, class, free will and circumstance in an era as fiercely entrepreneurial as ours.
Kohler is a director, writer, actor, dramaturg, and award-winning playwright. She is a freelance writer for local and national publications, and serves on the board of the Wisconsin Humanities Council. A native of Wisconsin, Kohler earned a B.A. from Harvard University as well as an M.A. from UW-Milwaukee.
The Theatre Arts Department at UW-Parkside is a nationally recognized award-winning program. Recognized as an Outstanding Department by the 2009 University of Wisconsin Board of Regents, the student-first approach continues to accrue accolades and honors, season after season. The high-quality productions in UW-Parkside’s state-of-the-art facilities inspire students and audiences alike. Over 90% of the departments recent grads find work in the theater or related fields.
