Entourage R
Picking up where the HBO series left off (2004-2011), the show’s entire cast returns for this film sequel. Adrian Grenier portrays movie star Vincent Chase, still loyal to his entourage of buds Eric (Kevin Connolly), Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) and Drama (Kevin Dillon). The foursome is determined to make their own film, directed by Vincent, under the guidance of his onetime agent-turned-studio head, Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven). If something can go wrong, it does, but somehow things always work out for Vincent and the boys. (Lisa Miller)
Insidious: Chapter 3 PG-13
In this prequel set before the haunting of the Lambert family, a teenage girl (Stefanie Scott) attempts to contact her dead mother’s spirit, but instead releases an evil entity determined to feed off her soul. As the demon pulls the girl further and further from reality, her father calls in gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) to help him rescue his daughter before the demon can drain the girl’s life. Directed and penned by Leigh Whannell of the Saw franchise, the film boasts a few scary moments, but too many simply fall flat. (L.M.)
Spy R
Having spent years as a desk-bound CIA analyst, Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) goes undercover to find a rogue nuclear bomb and the arms dealer who assassinated the agent (Jude Law) who was looking for it, and with whom lovelorn Susan worked for years. After being trained to effectively wield a gun, Susan is disguised as a dowdy Midwesterner and is equipped with high-tech gadgets that appear to be hemorrhoid patches and stool softeners. Undercover in Eastern Europe, Susan soon becomes a bodyguard for diabolical Bulgarian arms dealer Rayna Boyanov (Rose Byrne). Susan’s efforts are complicated by the male chauvinism of a British spy (Jason Statham) who inserts himself into her mission. McCarthy deftly handles an array of stunts that run the gamut from comedic to daring, ensuring there’s never a dull moment. (L.M.)
