Married couple Eric and Amy Bowen (Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt) are unaware their suburban home is haunted until their young daughter Maddie (Kennedi Clements) begins conducting long conversations with their television set. Then ghosts open a portal into Maddie’s closet and bring the girl into their realm in an effort to harness her life force for themselves. Helped by medium Carrigan Burke (Jared Harris), Eric, Amy and their two remaining children must overcome their fears if they are to rescue Maddie before the portal is sealed forever. Judging from the trailer, this reboot, co-written by Steven Spielberg (who also co-wrote the 1982 original), follows roughly the same storyline, but this version is filmed in 3D and tricked out with an array of special effects.
