This article is part of our Milwaukee Film Festival daily preview series. The series is brought to you by Associated Bank. I Am Not a Witch Saturday, October 27 @ 6:30 p.m. Fox-Bay Cinema Grill
Great Britain’s official entry for this year’s Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film is only partly in English and takes place thousands of miles from England’s green and pleasant land. Set in Zambia and directed by Zambian-born filmmaker Rungano Nyoni, I Am Not a Witch follows the strange path of Shula, a young girl accused of witchcraft. Unlike colonial America, the penalty isn’t death but a sentence of labor at a “witch camp” whose inmates are tethered to long white ribbons to prevent them from flying away. A pointed satire on the difficult position of African women in some traditional societies, I Am Not a Witch also takes a well-aimed shot at that increasingly fashionable Western industry called cultural tourism.
Also screened at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 31, Avalon Theater.
