Ten years ago, Isa Chandra Moskowitz set out to disprove the widely circulated notion that vegan cuisine is synonymous with dull, unflavorful cooking. The newly revised anniversary edition of her influential cookbook, Vegan with a Vengeance, is something of a greatest hits package with recipes for desserts culled from her follow-up books, Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar and Vegan Pie in the Sky, along with new additions for savory crepes, ginger roasted vegetables and lentil-walnut burgers. She has updated and simplified some of the earlier recipes (why take two steps when one will do?) and sketched out directions for a “post-punk pantry.” As she explains, Black Flag’s “Rise Above” pops into her head whenever she bakes muffins.
