The ornate historic building at the north end of Shorewood’s business district was home to many things over the last century, including a pharmacy and an art gallery. Resplendent in yellow and blue, the landmark now houses North Shore Boulangerie, 4401 N. Oakland Ave. Yes, bakery is sold here, including fougasse with sun-dried tomatoes or olives and beer-glazed Alsatian rye baked with caraway seeds, but there is also a sandwich menu, a trio of entrées, a selection of soups and starters, and a short wine list. The full menu kicks in at 11:30 a.m., but bakery and coffee are available earlier along with an omelet and a creamy quiche Lorraine in a buttery crust. On a sunny day, light pours through the expansive windows, enhancing the warm environment. Open Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.
