At A Chik & A Skillet Soul Food Restaurant (923 N. 27th St.), roast beef and baked chicken & dressing are only served Sundays, but the rest of the week the aforementioned fowl may be had fried or smothered in gravy. Those options apply to pork chops, too. Sides such as sliced candied yams, collard greens with bits of smoked pork, creamy mac & cheese, fresh string beans and a different daily bean (on a recent trip, it was butter beans) round out Chik’s full meals’ flavor palette. Sadly, moist, crumbly corn muffins aren’t very effective sops for all the juiciness, but they’re still a tasty, starchy morsel. For those still craving dessert, caramel cake and sweet potato pie come by the slice, while banana pudding and peach cobbler are available in large and small sizes. It seems the closer a soul food outlet is to Downtown, the less apt it is to offer chitterlings and hocks. A Chick & A Skillet holds true to that inclination, but there’s so much else here in such variety and quality that one shouldn’t miss the porcine exotica.
