27th Street Fish & Chicken Market (3371 N. 27th St.) specializes in takeout, though there are a couple seats facing the window where the homey fare can be enjoyed. Chicken wings, gizzards and tenders may be had in various combinations. Also served are pork chops, gyros, shrimp and several sandwiches, including the gargantuan 27th Street Burger, topped with cheese, bacon, onion rings and barbecue sauce. The best question for any soul food place is: “How is their catfish?” The filets (bone-in steaks are also served) taste like they’re fried in slightly spicy cornbread crumbs and are served with hot sauce. Minced, creamy-style coleslaw and the sliced white bread come with dinners, along with choice of beverage. This could be one of the few locations in Milwaukee to offer crispy, doughy hush puppies, which may alone be worth the trip.
