Vinchi’s Pizza (3158 S. Howell Ave.) delivers a hearty, straightforward treatment of the Italian classic. It’s nestled away at the back of The Bubbler, a neighborhood bar with a homey feel decked out with dartboards and wood wainscoting. Pizza is the name of the game, although an enthusiastic fan sang praises of the pork chop sandwich on her way out the door. A large Vinchi’s Special ($22.50) easily feeds five. The specialty is thin crust, and Vinchi’s has developed a following for both their crust and their unique sauce. You get your ’za on a platter with paper plates to pass around, which might be a sneaky test to brag that the level of grease is just right. Other options include a grilled chicken parmesan sandwich ($9) or a cheesy bread loaded with garlic and melted cheese ($4.50). Be aware of the cash-only policy, although an ATM is available near the front door for those with plastic.
