At Nino’s Southern Sides (4475 N. Oakland Ave.) in Shorewood, soul food translates well to one of the city’s toniest suburbs under experienced restaurateur Valerie Daniels-Carter’s guiding hand. Some of the African American cuisine’s more specialized offerings, including barbecued pig’s feet and chitterlings may be had, though only on select days. Fried catfish, smothered pork chops and chicken (smothered or fried) comprise Nino’s trio of daily entrées. But like the establishment’s name promises, a gamut of 17 side dishes provides a strong draw. Bits of smoked ham hock accentuate collard greens. The comforting mush of Northern beans and stewed okra can complement the daily staples. Corn bread comes with every meal. Nino’s also distinguishes itself by beverage selection, making available several flavors of Sprecher gourmet sodas on tap in addition to ice tea and lemonade. Take-out is emphasized, but monochromatic decor incorporates a couple of tables and a row of window counter seats facing Downtown Shorewood, where Nino’s is the only eatery proffering its kind of down-home fare.
