Dear Ruthie,
Can you tell me, what's the secret to a happy relationship? I can’t seem to master this concept on my own, and I don’t know what I’m missing exactly. What’s the secret? Please, please let me know what you think. (A friend told me to message you with this request!)
Thanks,
Curious in Cudahy
Dear Curious,
After decades of observing humanity from bar stools, drag shows, pageants, campgrounds, fundraisers, resorts and vacation hot spots, I've learned the following:
A happy relationship isn't finding the ultimate, most-perfect person on Earth. It's finding somebody whose weird matches your weird. It’s somebody who laughs at your jokes, shows up when life gets messy and misses you when you’re not around.
It’s somebody who knows your flaws, accepts them and still offers you the last cheese curd in the basket or the largest slice of pizza.
Passion matters. Attraction matters. Kindness, however, is what gets people through funerals, sickness, layoffs, debt and all the other nonsense life throws around like beads at Mardi Gras.
Find someone who's kind, thoughtful, funny, attentive and appreciative. The rest is gravy.

August 22—Pride Ride to Fight MS at Harbor Room (117 E. Greenfield Ave.): The local LGBTQ+ motorcycle group invites everyone to join them on the fight against Multiple Sclerosis with this friendly 10 a.m. ride. Don’t have a bike? Join the fun when you follow along in your car.

August 22—Showtune Saturday at Woody’s (1579 S. Second St.): Maple Veener hosts this regular singalong that puts a spotlight on the Great White Way. August 24—Monday Night Karaoke at Pop (124 W. National Ave.): Stop at Pop to see why this karaoke night is so “pop”-ular.
