When you’re an advice columnist you spend a lot of time hearing from single people looking for love. You also hear from folks who are partnered yet unsure married life is for them. Yep—the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
Many couples are able to work things out and lots of single men and women ultimately find their match. There are those, however, who struggle with their situation, always wondering if they’re missing out on something. Take the reader below, for instance. Tommy is missing his single days but also loves the relationship he’s in. What to do? Let’s dive into his email and find out what his options are!
Dear Ruthie,
I miss being single, but I love my partner tremendously. Am I doing something wrong? Are these conflicting feelings normal?
Help,
Terrible Tommy
Dear Tommy,
You’re not terrible in the least. Missing single life doesn’t mean you chose wrong. It simply means you remember your past fondly.
Every relationship requires trade-offs. The key is whether you still feel like you in your current situation. Is there something you “miss” specifically? Space? Spontaneity? If that’s eating you up, sit down and discuss it with your honey. A good partner won’t panic at honesty.
Together, you can adjust life without ending the relationship … and without feeling you’re missing out on anything. Love should expand you, not shrink you. Discuss things early before resentment sneaks in.
