Although the present administration tries to roll back the normalization of relations between Cuba and the U.S., cultural exchange continues. Un Día Cualquiera is the second release on a North American label by Havana’s Harold López-Nussa. The talented young pianist has one foot in jazz and the other in his country’s traditional rhythms, continuing a dialogue that started when jazz began. The spin he gives his fusion is entirely contemporary and touches on the West African roots of jazz and Cuban music. He also inherited a sense of pianistic romanticism that was part of Cuba’s European conservatory-based music education. He could find his way around an etude if he’d like. Un Día Cualquiera was recorded at the Boston NPR affiliate’s studio.
Harold López-Nussa will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at the UW-Milwaukee Fine Arts Recital Hall. Advance tickets for $15 can be purchased online through www.haroldtrio.Eventbrite.com. Tickets at the door can be purchased for $25.
