Trumpeter John Bailey was a young guy when he entered the music business—and his talent drew notice. Bailey played with Buddy Rich and Ray Charles and worked with Latin jazz artists such as Ray Barretto and Arturo O’Farrill. Now, decades on, he’s released the first album under his own name. In Real Time is a showcase for his own dexterity as well as that of his side musicians, especially guitarist John Hart. Most of the sliding, slippery melodies are Bailey’s, though he tips his hat to Latin America on the album’s two covers, both by Brazilians, Gilberto Gil’s “Ensaio Geral” and Milton Nascimento’s “Morro Velho.”
