Riverwest's Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts has been as busy as ever the last couple years, with a full schedule of community events and all-ages performances including DJ Bizzon’s youth-oriented Scratch Sessions and the monthly hip-hop event Freespace, as well as a variety of rock, electronic and jazz shows. The venue also hosts an array of programming for seniors during the week, including arts and crafts workshops and lectures.
Unfortunately, as many of the artists who have performed there can attest, the building is showing its age. The dated sound system can make hip-hop shows in particular inconvenient, and more alarmingly, the building’s flat roof is leaking.
“It’s gotten to the point where we’ve had to have buckets on the stage occasionally,” says Ruth Weill, vice president of the Riverwest Artist Association, which runs the venue. “Musicians know about the roof so they protect their gear.”
The association is launching a capital campaign called “Raise the Roof” to address those problems, with hopes of raising $30,000 to repair the roof and install a built-in sound system. Weill expects repairs to the roof alone to cost around $20,000.
That fundraising effort begins next week with four consecutive nights of fundraising concerts at the Jazz Gallery, spanning electronic and noise music, jazz, hip-hop and improv. The schedule and lineup for those shows is below.
