This week on The Disclaimer, WMSE's weekly half hour of important conversations with Ryan Schleicher, Milwaukee Record editor Matt Wild and I, we're talking about change. Starting this August, the music industry will implement a global release day for new records. That'll put an end to the longstanding Tuesday release day in America, and pose yet another challenge for independent record stores, which will no longer have a few extra days to re-stock hot titles before the weekend rush. We talk about the logic behind the change, and wonder whether release dates even matter at all in an age where everybody streams anything anyway. Then Matt calls attention to a recent blog post from former Journal Sentinel film critic Duane Dudek calling out the paper for abandoning localized film coverage. But with so many film reviews available online, what role is there for a local film critic at daily papers these days?
