After yesterday's brutal 8-1 defeat, The Milwaukee Brewers complete their three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals this afternoon with a 12:05 p.m. game at Miller Park.

I remember a controversial study published in Milwaukee magazine around 1995, rating all public schools in the greater Milwaukee area. The home realtor biz loved this study, served as an excellent sales tool for the suburbs, a reason to pay more than what it was actually worth.
The study revealed the money per pupil spent in each local school district (tax burden), the racial mix of each local district, as well as standardized score results in each elementary school. The Waukesha schools looked better than MPS, but there were wide spreads in MPS, wide spreads in Waukesha, and a good 3/4 of it overlapped (so much for "common sense" that the lowest white is automatically better than the highest black).
The listings of the 3rd grade reading results was a real eye-opener. In Waukesha, each school was listed and ranked. Schools on the edge of town, in "all white" areas that had Zero rental property, rated only middle of the pack, even below the schools in areas like latino White Rock Ave. neighborhood.
Kind of shot holes in the theory that children of parents who have money, parents who care enough to CHOOSE the proper neighborhood would fare better than the "poor" kids, or kids of parents who did not care enough to spend big money for their kids sake.
My take-away was this... parents in the affluent edge of town housing areas were more likely to be both be career people. No time for parenting their own kids, it was all they could do to just keep up the proper spending level for life in up-scale sub-divisions. Making sure their kids had the right playsets visible in the yard, were in the right supervised extracurricular sports programs was more important than having some Dr. Seuss books and reading to their children, something not visible to the neighbors.
All these parents care about school is that they can drop their kids off at school, secure in knowing that there will not be any drug or gang drama, will not be any race or culture drama, none of the stuff that takes parents focus away from their careers and making suburb money.
They really do not care if the schools succeed at actually teaching, just be good at babysitting and not giving their kids a "bad image".

The point about "cheating"... I noticed that some towns like Germantown, had 100% proficiency on there 3rd grade test results. When I asked a teacher, they said "that's because they make sure certain kids are absent or on a field trip on the day of the standard test". It's not just the kids doing the cheating, it's also the parents and the school faculty.
Can you imagine what "teaching to the test" will really be like?

Students that don't take the test need to be factored into the averages as a ZERO. I think MPS needs to do this so that the kids skipping out are ZEROs and brings their average down. My guess is the voucher students arn't at the mall

Once again, Lisa, you stuck your foot back in your mouth.Â You might want to revisit data released by the University of Arkansas that shows better results in MPCP than MPS.
I'm sure you were excited when DPI released the results, but waiting a few more hours would have saved you the embarrassment of retracting your statements, which we both know you would never do.

My guess is the scores at MPS are actually much lower than reported. Its no secret there is wide spread cheating on standardized tests. There is too much at stake. If schools don't show improvement or if they are not close to the voucher schools, people could lose jobs, schools could lose funding, and schools could be closed. There is no question that cheating is widespread and in none of the articles did I read how much MPS spent on cheating detection services. Based on recent articles I'm not surprised Lisa Kaiser has accepted the test scores as valid. What if MPS showed scores of being near the state average? Would she still believe them? Maybe if MPS cheats just enough to be ahead of the voucher schools, no one will raise too many questions. And we all know the parents of the voucher school kids are not going to pull their kids out of voucher schools and suddenly put them back in MPS. If a report came out that said it was safe to drink gasoline, would you drink it? Of course not. There is an old saying, you can't con a con. They want us to believe that somehow a bunch of short-bus kids who rarely show up for school scored better that voucher school kids. Seriously?!!
