Last week we were shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden death of attorney Marc Marotta, a friend of the Shepherd. Marotta, just 52, had been a fixture in state and local politics for decades, serving, among his many contributions, as secretary of the state Department of Administration under then-Gov. Jim Doyle and as the chairman of the board of the BMO Harris Bradley Center. Prior to that, he was a basketball star at Marquette University and turned down an NBA contract to attend Harvard Law School. Marc was raised in Pennsylvania and came to Milwaukee to attend Marquette, fell in love with the city and returned after law school. He became a partner at Wisconsin’s largest law firm and, in addition to practicing law, he devoted his career to championing Milwaukee through his political work and participation in civic organizations such as Summerfest and Boys & Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee. He was a truly gifted, special person who could build relationships with people from all walks of life. Marc was one of the good guys who was always willing to help. “There were very few major issues or efforts going on in Milwaukee where Marc was not involved and his contributions always moved the ball forward. I will miss him,” said Shepherd Express Publisher Louis Fortis. We offer our condolences to his wife, Kim, and their four children.
