During the current COVID-19 pandemic, many experts and elected officials, including Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, are encouraging people to spend time outdoors while practicing social distancing. Gardening is a healthy hobby which can help eliminate stress during this time of economic and political uncertainty.
Webers Greenhouse (4215 N. Green Bay Ave,) will open May 2 and offer curbside pickup service and limited in-store shopping during the pandemic. The greenhouse complex was purchased by Milwaukee nonprofit organization Teens Grow Greens in 2018. Founded in 2013, the organization offers paid internships to area youths in which they plant and tend produce at two area garden locations.
“The result is a teenager who is confident in their ability to communicate, lead, work with a team, create and develop ideas, and go after what they want,” says Charles Uihlein, Teens Grow Greens executive director.
All greenhouse profits support Teens Grow Greens internships and programs. “That’s why we say, ‘We Grow More Than Plants,’” Uihlein explains.
“We encourage people to start gardens with their kids, spend more time outdoors, and experience the therapy and joy of growing your own food or watching your flowers bloom,” Claire Muza, Teens Grow Greens growing director, adds.
