Sure, I’m a jaded music writer who’s been to Summerfest every year for more than 40 years, but each year Summerfest books at least one act that can make me feel like an excited teen at the Rock Stage back in 1978.
This year, it’s Tiffany … yes, the ‘80s era “I Think We’re Alone Now” pop diva. She of massive mall concerts, big hair and sparkly jean jackets.
Tiffany is among the best purveyors of finely crafted, sugary-sweet pop rock of all time. At 16, she earned two US number-one hits with “I Think We’re Alone Now” and “Could’ve Been,” and set a record as the youngest female artist to top the Billboard charts with her debut album.
She’s never really gone away. Based in Nashville for the past 17 years, Tiffany’s been busy acting, writing and recording new music and performing live. Her most recent albums, A Million Miles and Shadows, showcase a mature, harder-edged Tiffany. But the big voice hasn’t changed a bit.
“I love everything I'm doing now with the Shadows album and touring the world again,” said Tiffany (ironically calling from a mall outside of Nashville). Her band includes musicians with serious rock chops including Scot Coogan (Lynch Mob and Ace Frehley) and Johnny Martin (L.A. Guns). “They’re extremely talented—we really rock. I look out in the audience and it’s such a mixture of music lovers. People who get it, they get that I’m more than just an ‘80s artist. They follow me on social media. They get my wicked sense of humor, my love for music. It's been fulfilling to be able to carry my original fans as well as bring new rockers on this journey with me.”
