When Rachel Cartwright started CBD Therapeutics of Wisconsin (8652 S. Market Pl., Oak Creek) two years ago, you couldn’t legally grow hemp in Wisconsin. That hemp was necessary to produce cannabidiol, the wildly popular derivative of the hemp plant better known as CBD. Because of this, Cartwright was forced to buy her CBD from farmers based out of Colorado.
But after a bill that allowed farmers to grow hemp in Wisconsin was signed into law in November of 2017, CBD retailers like Cartwright will soon be able to provide products that are made 100% in-state. Cartwright plans on using the new law to take a “shop local” approach to her products.
“We’ll have a 100% Wisconsin-made product as soon as possible,” Cartwright said. “We’re able to then put the money and the jobs, and all of the work, right here in Wisconsin. We’re making the products here, using the farm fields that are here, so that we aren’t shipping money off to another place. We’re keeping the money in our own economy.”
Cartwright also runs a retail store and CBD spa called Landrights Botanical Healing Center. Here, highly-trained specialists work directly with customers to find the correct dosage and products that fit their needs. Masseuses also give special CBD massages and spa treatments.
CBD’s explosion into the mainstream is undeniable. A recent article in the New York Times referenced celebrities from Mandy Moore to Willie Nelson touting its benefits. You can see CBD oils and gummies everywhere from your local head shop to gas stations. The phenomena, according to Cartwright, is based on people seeing the health benefits—which range from pain relief to better sleep to lowered anxiety—without the stigma that comes along with medical marijuana.
“You have a set of people who are turning to CBD because they understand the benefits and relief of cannabis, but now CBD is this option that has never been there before,” she said. “You have that whole set of people who need the THC-freeness of the product.” Because there is no THC in CBD Therapeutics of Wisconsin’s products, they will not cause you to have a positive drug test.
Still, there are CBD products on the market that do not have the same standards that Cartwright and her team diligently enforce. “You can buy CBD gummy bears at all of the gas stations now,” she said. “In the industry, there are a lot of shiesty products. It is what we call a buy beware sort of thing. If you’re not going to come buy my product, then there are certain rules that you should follow when buying any CBD product.”
These rules include making sure that any product you buy has a third-party batched lab result, to ensure that the labeled amount of CBD is accurate.
One way that CBD Therapeutics of Wisconsin helps make sure that everyone that needs their products has access to them is through its “Angel Program.” Through this program, 5% of all net proceeds get donated back into the company to provide a sliding scale to people who show that they are unable to afford the products otherwise.
