Thirty-eight years ago, Woodland Pattern Book Center held its first annual gala. Today, the bookstore has been a staple in Riverwest for nearly four decades, well-known for providing contemporary literature and creative arts to the community. Their upcoming Anniversary Gala, open to the public ($25 advance, $30 at the door) will feature performances by jazz pianist Marilyn Crispell and National Book Award poet Nathaniel Mackey in addition to an opening address from Milwaukee native Jen Benka, current president of the Academy of American Poets. Tickets are available online or at the event, which will take place at 7 p.m., Nov. 17 at The Cooperage, 822 S. Water St.
