Smoked salsa. That should be incentive enough to visit Cocina 1022, 1022 S. First St. Not just the jalapeños, but every ingredient in the condiment accompanying this Mexican restaurant’s white corn tortilla chips is given the same fiery treatment. The burnished hue may appear unusual but the preparation makes for an addictive dip. And that’s just for starters. The pambazo is a torta-like sandwich filled with chorizo, diced potatoes, lettuce, avocado and mayonnaise, its namesake bun dunked in a vibrantly red chili sauce. An exemplary side, the esquites are sweet corn kernels made creamy and piquant with cotija cheese, jalapeños and lime. Cheesecake, churros with ice cream and flan number among Cocina 1022’s rotating dessert selections, but the daily varieties of aguas frescas, such as strawberry, can likewise complement the restaurant’s savory fare or offset it with a sweet afternote.
