Happy Mother’s Day to all of the Mil-Town mamas out there. Make it a good one ladies. Celebrate it with your lovely little ones…or don’t, and really have a good time. Not sure what to do? Our city offers it all, so check out my words of wisdom and take a bite outta the weekend. Mix up the mommy-day routine, and make this a not-your-mama’s Mother’s Day to remember.
Dear Ruthie,
You’ve been a Milwaukee icon for quite a while now. Tell me, what places, areas and hot spots in Milwaukee do you enjoy most?
—Wondering Wanderer
Dear Wanderlust,
I’m just a big-city country girl! Born and raised on the Southside, I’m at my most comfortable Downtown. I love a good bar, preferably one shaped like a horseshoe or at least with some curves to it so I can easily check out any Cream City eye-candy. (Eww…that sounded gross.)
I like the city’s funky restaurants, black box theaters and art galleries. I love the summer festivals on the lake, and I love the varied music scene our city offers.
I love our local icons, characters and legends. I’m obsessed with Milverine, I’m thrilled to work with Art Kumbalek and I miss Dick Bacon. (Who, by the way, as a nude sunbather had the best name ever!)
I’m an East Side dame. I really dig (do people still say “dig?”) the wonderful diversity of that area—from cultural to generational and from artistic to economic. It’s a marvelous melting pot of fabulosity.
Did I answer your question? Probably not, but the next time you’re in a happening hot spot, look for me. Or, at the very least, email me and tell me about it! Speaking of hot spots, check out the list of this week’s happenings and let’s meet up!
UPCOMING EVENTS:
May 7: Karaoke Night at Harbor Room (117 E. Greenfield Ave.): It’s time to sing your pants off…or at least croon your shirt off. The Wisconsin Power Exchange social group brings karaoke to this long-standing leather bar from 6 to 10 p.m. Sign up to sing a song or simply sit back and watch the fun during this change-of-pace Thursday night. As usual, men without shirts drink for less!
May 8: Nick Offerman & Megan Mullally’s ‘Summer of 69’ at The Riverside Theater (116 W. Wisconsin Ave.): The real-life comedy coupling brings the story of their marriage to the stage with this hilarious show. Featuring more laughs than Karen Walker can shake a stirrer at and more ribbing than Ron Swanson could carve out himself, the performance promises songs and “light petting.” The 7 p.m. show is sold out, but see pabsttheater.org for tickets to the 10:30 performance.
May 8: Mr. & Miss La Cage Nightclub at La Cage (801 S. Second St.): The granddaddy of all Wisconsin LGBT clubs, La Cage sets out to crown the best-of-the-best with this glitzy pageant. (All the while making a nod toward Pokémon…don’t ask. Just go.) Bryanna Banx$ is the hostess with the most-ess during the 10 p.m. competition. Doors open at 9.
May 9: Murder Mystery with the Miltown Kings at The Miramar Theatre (2844 N. Oakland Ave.): Join the “boys” of the city’s most-celebrated Drag King company during their final show of the season. Solve the sexy whodunit when the doors open at 9 p.m. for the 18-and-older evening. Cover charge is $8 at the door or $7 if you come in dinner attire. Swing by miltownkings.com for details.
May 10: Arrested and Uniforms Party at Kruz (345 E. National Ave.): Spend the morning with Mom…then come play! The Castaways MC of Milwaukee host another naughty, no-holds-barred party that’s full of hot men, hot raffles and more. The 3 to 7 p.m. party features a beer/soda bust and specials to anyone who arrives in uniform. It’s a Mother’s Day to remember, that’s for sure, officer!
