Is life a cabaret? I hope so! Particularly because I’m launching “Ruthie’s Big Gay Cabaret” at La Cage on April 13. I’ve always had a dream to host a cabaret show with all-live singing, a band, phenomenal guests, witty banter and such. Now that it’s happening, and I have to say that I’m freaking out a bit.
Sometimes reaching a goal or making a dream come true can be scary, however. Thoughts of failure, overwhelming to-do lists, intimidating goals and fear of the unknown can make anyone shy away from tackling new challenges. That seems to be the case of the fellow who shared the below message with me (and, boy, can I relate!). Let’s take a minute to help him out, shall we?
Dear Ruthie,
I was recently offered a promotion that would improve my money situation and life overall. I’m kind of freaking out, though, because I’m not sure I’m up to the job. I’d have a lot of people to answer to and I’d be a manager which is also new to me. I want to take the job but I’m feeling really insecure about it. Any words of wisdom?
Sincerely,
Basic Brandon
Dear Brandon,
Go for it! When the universe tosses you an opportunity like this, nab it! Someone at your company obviously thinks you’re ready for the challenge, so give it a shot.
So many people suffer from imposter syndrome—feeling you’re a phony despite your experience, knowledge or previous successes. This causes people to doubt their skills and talents and not realize their overall awesomeness. Whatever you do, don’t let imposter syndrome run your life and miss out on wonderful opportunities such as this one.
Take the job. Take a deep breath, trust in those who believe in you and focus on your greatness. Surround yourself with smart, effective uplifting people. Accept the fact that you don’t even know what you don’t know…and understand that in time you’ll learn more and more—and more! You can do this. Now, go conquer that new job, honey!
